Starmer puts UK cabinet on alert for potential US attack on Iran

Sir Keir Starmer has alerted his cabinet to a potential U.S. attack on Iran, despite initially downplaying such action.

British officials described the situation as "grave and volatile," while discussions included the possibility of strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities from the U.S.-U.K. base in Diego Garcia.

Britain aims to remain uninvolved in the Israel-Iran war to protect its embassy in Tehran. Starmer emphasized "de-escalation" in discussions, noting that President Trump had given no clear indication of involvement in the conflict. However, officials acknowledged that Trump's true intentions were uncertain.

The potential use of the Diego Garcia base could complicate Britain's stance. Last month, the U.K. signed a deal regarding sovereignty over the Chagos Islands while holding a long-term lease on the airbase.
