FDA bans red dye no. 3 from foods

The FDA has banned Red 3, a dye used in various foods, due to its potential cancer risks. This decision comes 35 years after the dye was prohibited in cosmetics. The FDA's action followed a 2022 petition from health advocates who cited studies linking the dye to cancer in lab rats. Consumers have until January 2027 to remove the dye from food products and until January 2028 for ingested drugs.

Advocates praised the ban, calling it a necessary step to protect public health, especially for children. However, some manufacturers may challenge the ban, arguing the dye's safety for human consumption.
