Zelensky and Council of Europe sign accord for Ukraine war tribunal
SUMMARY
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an agreement with the Council of Europe to create a tribunal for prosecuting senior Russian officials for the "crime of aggression" related to the Ukraine invasion. Zelensky emphasized the need for accountability, stating, "We need to show clearly aggression leads to punishment."
The tribunal aims to fill the jurisdictional gaps of the International Criminal Court, which cannot prosecute the crime of aggression. The Council of Europe hopes to have the tribunal operational next year, allowing various countries to support its establishment. This marks the first tribunal created by the organization.
