Space Force contracts with SpaceX for new secretive MILNET SATCOM network

SUMMARY

The Space Force is partnering with SpaceX to develop the MILNET, a new satellite communication constellation in low Earth orbit. This project aims to integrate with the Space Force's hybrid mesh network of commercial and Defense Department satellites.

Colonel Jeff Weisler announced that MILNET will consist of over 480 satellites, operated by SpaceX under Delta 8’s oversight. The network will utilize Starshield terminals with enhanced encryption to connect with SpaceX's Starlink.

The program involves significant contracts valued at up to $13 billion, although specific contract values remain undisclosed. The National Reconnaissance Office is managing the MILNET contract, contributing to its previously confidential status.

The U.S. Space Force has requested $277 million for the MILNET LEO constellation and halted funding for the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 3 Transport Layer. This budget request, linked to a classified National Reconnaissance Office effort, aims for a "plug and play" satellite architecture not reliant on SpaceX.
