Carney names Mark Wiseman as Canada's ambassador to US

Prime Minister Mark Carney has chosen Mark Wiseman as Canada’s new ambassador to the U.S. This cabinet-approved appointment comes as Canada prepares for crucial USMCA trade negotiations. Wiseman replaces Kirsten Hillman, who has served since 2017.

At 55, Wiseman has a strong business background but lacks government experience. He previously led institutions like BlackRock and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

The Conservatives have raised concerns over his past comments on Quebec and opposition to supply management. Mr. Wiseman shared a social-media post in May, 2023, that said “100 million may not be federal policy, but it should be – even if it makes Quebec howl.”

Wiseman's priority will be to establish connections with key U.S. officials as trade talks resume.
