UK launches first sanctions in new strategy to deter migrant crossings

SUMMARY

The UK imposed sanctions on over two dozen individuals and groups from the Balkans, Middle East, and China, aimed at curbing migrant crossings in the Channel. This marks the first use of the "Global Irregular Migration Sanctions Regime."

Asset freezes and travel bans target four gangs and a Chinese boat supplier linked to smuggling.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated, "From Europe to Asia we are taking the fight to the people-smugglers."

Despite a promise from Prime Minister Keir Starmer to tackle these gangs, nearly 24,000 migrants crossed this year, raising political tensions.

The government also aims to combat illegal working and plans to use AI to verify the ages of asylum-seekers.

Experts caution that while the sanctions are a step forward, their effectiveness remains uncertain.
