US bunker buster bombs vulnerable to anti-aircraft shells

SUMMARY

Chinese military scientists claim the U.S. Air Force's GBU-57 bunker buster bombs have vulnerabilities. A study indicates the bomb's reinforced nose offers protection, but its thin steel sides are susceptible to anti-aircraft shells. The researchers tested firing Swiss Oerlikon GDF guns, which can strike effectively under specific conditions. To damage the GBU-57, shells must hit at angles below 68 degrees and within 3,900 feet.

Adopting a "sniper fire control" method could enhance interception success, but combat realities may complicate this strategy. The technique relies on precise coordination between targeting and gun aiming, posing challenges in actual battle scenarios.
