Trump proposes opening waters off California and Florida to oil drilling

SUMMARY

The Trump administration proposed a five-year offshore oil and gas leasing plan, opening federal waters off California for the first time in 40 years. This schedule includes 34 auction sales in federal waters from 2026 to 2031, with up to six sales off Southern California and significant sales in Alaska.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated, “By moving forward with the development of a robust, forward-thinking leasing plan, we are ensuring that America’s offshore industry stays strong.” However, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the proposal, calling it “dead on arrival.”

Florida politicians are also opposed, fearing oil spills could threaten tourism. Environmental groups warn against expanding drilling, and lawsuits have been filed to block upcoming lease sales. Public comments on the draft schedule will be accepted starting Nov. 24.
