Marco Rubio impostor uses AI voice to call high-level officials

An impersonator posing as Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reached out to foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a congress member using AI software to mimic his voice and writing style. U.S. officials believe the intent is to manipulate them for access to sensitive information.

The campaign started in mid-June when the impostor created a Signal account named “Marco.Rubio@state.gov” and contacted multiple officials. They left voicemails and sent messages to encourage communication via Signal.

The State Department is investigating these incidents and is implementing safeguards to prevent future impersonations.
