China agrees zero-tariff access for 53 African nations

SUMMARY

China will grant zero-tariff access for imports from 53 African nations starting May 1, 2026, enhancing its trade relations across the continent. This decision arrives amid uncertainty regarding the U.S. renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and ongoing trade tensions with the EU.

Previously, zero-tariff privileges were limited to select countries. The new regime extends duty-free benefits broadly, excluding only Eswatini.

The announcement followed diplomatic efforts from African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. He supported trade discussions that have led to a non-binding framework agreement with China.

Analysts caution that structural barriers still hinder African exporters despite the tariff removal.
