France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech

France plans to transition government computers from Microsoft Windows to the open source Linux operating system. This move aims to reduce reliance on U.S. technology and regain control over its digital infrastructure. French Minister David Amiel stated the initiative is to “regain control of our digital destiny.”

The switchover will start with the digital agency DINUM. France's shift follows growing concerns over dependence on U.S. tech giants and aims for digital sovereignty. The government previously announced it will stop using Microsoft Teams in favor of a locally developed alternative.
