Israeli army plans overseas recruitment drives in US and France
Israel’s military faces a severe shortage of 10,000–12,000 troops, prompting plans to recruit youth from particularly the U.S. and France, targeting 700 annual enlistments. This strategy aims to bolster ranks strained by ongoing conflicts, particularly since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
The shortfall stems from ultra-Orthodox Jews’ refusal to serve, despite failed efforts to end their exemptions for religious study. Existing recruits are dropping out, citing “physical and psychological trauma” from prolonged combat. Senior commanders, per Maariv, noted a 7,500-soldier gap, highlighting systemic issues.
Recruiting abroad raises ethical and legal concerns, including questions of loyalty and foreign government policies. The military’s plan reflects deeper challenges, such as declining reservist retention and equipment shortages, as operations like the planned four-month Gaza City occupation loom.
