Japan updates its Megaquake disaster prevention plan

SUMMARY

Japan's government aims to reduce potential deaths from a Nankai Trough megaquake by 80% over the next decade. This is part of a revised disaster-prevention plan adopted by the Central Disaster Prevention Council. The update reflects changes from a 2014 plan.

Current estimates suggest that around 298,000 fatalities could occur in such an event. The new measures will involve enhancing emergency transportation systems and collaboration among various sectors to mitigate risks effectively. The plan marks a significant shift in Japan's approach to earthquake preparedness.
