Israel plans to seize control over large parts of Southern Lebanon, Defense Minister Says
Israel plans to expand its control in southern Lebanon amid a ground offensive against Hezbollah. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel aims to hold territory south of the Litani River, which has historically marked a conflict boundary.
Hezbollah’s reinforcements have prompted Israel to bomb five bridges vital for civilians. Katz noted that residents evacuated from southern Lebanon won't return until northern Israeli security is assured.
Some Israeli officials now advocate for a larger territorial claim, with finance minister Bezalel Smotrich insisting, “The Litani must become our new border with the state of Lebanon.”
Since the conflict intensified earlier this month, Israeli airstrikes have caused significant destruction and casualties in Lebanon, particularly in Beirut. The military continues to target Hezbollah fighters and affected villages near the border.
