US senators seek to block Nvidia sales of advanced chips to China

SUMMARY

A bipartisan bill, the Secure and Feasible Exports Chips Act, aims to block Nvidia from selling advanced chips to China for 30 months. This legislation, supported by Senators Pete Ricketts and Chris Coons, addresses concerns about China gaining access to critical American AI technology.

Ricketts emphasized that “denying Beijing access to these chips is therefore essential.” As Nvidia's H200 and Blackwell chips could significantly enhance China’s AI capabilities, there is bipartisan concern over allowing exports.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argued for the ability to export competitive technology. However, critics like Steve Bannon call for a complete ban on chip sales to China, citing national security risks.
