More than 65 refugees and migrants die in boat sinking off Yemeni coast
SUMMARY
At least 68 African refugees and migrants have died, with 74 others missing after a boat capsized off Yemen's coast, according to the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM). The boat, carrying 154 Ethiopians, sank near Abyan province. Twelve survivors were rescued, while bodies were found washed ashore.
Authorities are arranging burials near Shaqra as search efforts continue. The route between Yemen and the Horn of Africa remains dangerous for migrants fleeing conflict, particularly from Somalia and Ethiopia.
In 2024, over 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen, which has seen increased patrols to curb the dangerous crossings.
