Syria signs $800m port deal with UAE firm DP World

SUMMARY

Syria has signed an $800 million deal with DP World to redevelop Tartous port, aiming to boost post-war reconstruction. The agreement was made in Damascus, attended by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Officials regard this as a key step to modernize logistics in the country.

DP World CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem emphasized Syria's economic potential, stating, "Tartous is an essential hub for trade and exports." The deal follows other major contracts, including a 30-year agreement with French firm CMA CGM for Latakia port and a $7 billion energy deal aimed at reviving Syria’s power sector.

This shift comes as the U.S. has softened sanctions, seeking to support Syria's reconstruction efforts.
