Luigi Mangione will not face death penalty, judge rules

Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty in the case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's fatal execution style shooting, as ruled by Judge Margaret M. Garnett. The judge dismissed two federal counts, including murder by firearm, but Mangione still faces two federal stalking charges and has pleaded not guilty.

The shooting occurred outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024, while Thompson was on his way to a conference, prompting a regional manhunt. Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania. He also faces nine charges from New York state prosecutors, including second-degree murder, and has pleaded not guilty in that case as well.
