M.I.T. nuclear scientist fatally shot in his home

A homicide investigation is underway following the shooting death of MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts. The 47-year-old was shot on Monday night and pronounced dead on Tuesday morning. Authorities have not yet made any arrests.

Loureiro was director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center and recognized for his significant work in physics. He received the Presidential Early Career Award earlier in January for his contributions to magnetic fields generation.

MIT's president expressed sorrow over Loureiro's death, highlighting the impact on the community. He was praised as a brilliant scientist and mentor. Portugal's foreign minister and the U.S. ambassador to Portugal have also offered condolences.
