Trump nominates US Senator Markwayne Mullin to succeed Kristi Noem

President Trump announced that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will resign at the end of the month after serving just over a year. She will be replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma. Trump praised Noem, stating, "has served us well," and assigned her a new role as "Envoy for The Shield of the Americas."

The change follows criticism of Noem regarding a $200 million ad campaign that urged illegal immigrants to deport voluntarily. Noem claimed this initiative was approved by the president, but a White House official refuted the claim, stating, “POTUS did not sign off on a $220 MILLION dollar ad campaign."

Noem's leadership had faced bipartisan backlash over intense immigration enforcement actions during her tenure.
