New Zealand halts new puberty blockers for young transgender people

New Zealand has announced a ban on new prescriptions of puberty blocking drugs for transgender youth, effective December 19. This decision follows reports from the health ministry citing a lack of “high-quality evidence” regarding the drugs' benefits and risks. Health Minister Simeon Brown stated doctors cannot prescribe these medications to those not already using them.

Critics warn that the ban could worsen mental health among affected individuals. Dr. Elizabeth McElrea from the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa emphasized that this could lead to increased suicidality and dysphoria. Opposition spokesperson Shanan Halbert urged for informed decision-making involving doctors and families.
