Germany: Second arson attack on rail line in two days

SUMMARY

In August 2025, “Kommando Angry Birds,” a left-wing extremist group, claimed two arson attacks on a Düsseldorf-Duisburg rail line, targeting signaling cables. “Many things would work infinitely better without the industrial system,” their statement read, posted on Indymedia. The attacks disrupted ICE routes to Berlin and Frankfurt, causing delays and rerouting.

Police confirmed the use of similar incendiary devices, including a suspected “ice block timer” detonator, known to the group for a year. State security deems the claims authentic, warning of rising left-wing radicalization. “We have to expect further attacks,” a state advocate said, citing threats to infrastructure and businesses.

Heiko Teggatz, Federal Police Trade Union Chairman, labeled the group a “criminal, if not terrorist association,” urging stronger security measures. “Any disturbance of rail traffic here directly or indirectly has an impact on this economic area,” the group boasted, targeting Germany’s critical infrastructure. The attacks signal a dangerous escalation in extremist sabotage, threatening economic stability and public safety in North Rhine-Westphalia.
