Britain to rely on France to avoid blackouts this winter
SUMMARY
Britain plans to import electricity from France and other European neighbors this winter to prevent blackouts. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) will utilize interconnectors, high voltage cables linking the UK to France, Holland, Belgium, Norway, and Denmark, especially on “tight days” when the demand for power is high.
Neso’s winter report indicates a potential demand of about 60.5GW. There is confidence in maintaining a surplus but acknowledges tight days, likely in early December or mid-January. Increased reliance on renewable energy means backup power is critical due to variable supply from sources like wind and solar.
The importance of managing supply and demand is underscored by a recent blackout in Spain.
