Colombia's Petro says he survived assassination attempt
Colombian President Gustavo Petro claims he survived an assassination attempt while traveling by helicopter. On Monday night, he was unable to land due to fears that people "were going to shoot" at his aircraft. Petro reported the incident in a cabinet meeting, revealing they "headed out to open sea for four hours" to avoid danger.
He has faced threats from drug traffickers since taking office in August 2022. Colombia has a history of assassinations targeting leftist leaders. Petro, the first leftist president, has previously reported threats against his life.
This came a week after Trump held a nearly two-hour meeting with Petro, one which both leaders called friendly; a dramatic reversal from weeks earlier, when Trump accused Petro of flooding cocaine into the U.S. and threatened him and his country with military action.
