COP30
Acres of Amazon rainforest trees cut down to build road for climate summit
SUMMARY
Brazil plans to host COP30, a major climate summit, by significantly clearing the Amazon rainforest to build a new highway. The summit will take place in Belém from November 10 to 21. Alongside road construction, the government also aims to enhance the airport's capacity and develop a city park.
However, locals, like Claudio Verequete, complain that this development has destroyed their livelihoods. He stated, “Our harvest has already been cut down.” Environmental experts warn that wildlife habitats will be severely affected, limiting animal movement and breeding areas. Critics see this approach as contradictory to Brazil's pledge to end illegal deforestation by 2028.
