Confederate statue toppled during Black Lives Matter protests will be reinstalled

SUMMARY

The National Park Service plans to restore and reinstall the statue of Albert Pike, a Confederate general, in Washington, D.C. It was toppled during Black Lives Matter protests on June 19, 2020. The Park Service states the restoration follows federal historic preservation laws and recent executive orders to beautify the capital.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton opposes the decision, calling it "odd and indefensible," given Pike's controversial past, including his resignation for war crimes. The statue is expected to be back in place by October.
