Australia delivers Abrams tanks to Ukraine for war with Russia

Australia has delivered M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a A$245 million ($160 million) aid package to bolster its defense against Russia. As a major non-NATO supporter, Australia has supplied aid since Russia's invasion began in February 2022.

Defense Minister Richard Marles stated that most of the 49 tanks have been delivered, with the remainder on the way. Marles emphasized that "the M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ongoing fight" against Russia.

Overall, Australia has contributed A$1.5 billion ($980 million) to Ukraine and imposed sanctions on around 1,000 Russian entities. The government also banned exports of alumina and aluminum ores to Russia.
