German warships await orders on crossing Taiwan Strait; first passage through since 2002

Two German warships await orders from Berlin to potentially pass through the Taiwan Strait, marking the first German naval presence there since 2002. While other nations, including the U.S. and Canada, have sent ships through the strait, China claims it as part of its territory due to its sovereignty over Taiwan.

Rear Admiral Axel Schulz stated, "We are showing our flag here to demonstrate that we stand by our partners and friends." The German vessels will visit Tokyo, South Korea, and the Philippines before exercises with multiple nations.

China opposes foreign military activities in the region, arguing it undermines stability. However, Germany aims to reinforce international maritime laws amid rising tensions over Beijing's territorial claims.
