Meloni backs giving Ukraine NATO security without membership

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently proposed granting Ukraine NATO-like security without full membership. Speaking at a European Union leaders' meeting in Brussels, she emphasized the need for "more durable solutions" rather than deploying peacekeeping troops. Meloni suggested extending NATO's Article 5, which invokes collective defense, as a more effective approach.

This marks her first clear support for such a proposal. While viewed as a possible link between Europe and former President Trump, its acceptance by the U.S. remains uncertain. Meloni noted this arrangement "implies extending the coverage that NATO countries have also to Ukraine."
