María Corina Machado

Venezuelan Nobel Peace Prize winner in Oslo

SUMMARY

Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado emerged from hiding in Venezuela to collect her award in Oslo. She fled to Curaçao and then to Norway to accept the prize, which her daughter accepted on her behalf earlier.

In her first public appearance since January, she greeted supporters from the balcony of Oslo's Grand Hotel. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre praised her efforts, acknowledging the sacrifices made by her and her family.

Machado expressed hope for Venezuela's future, stating, "I am very hopeful Venezuela will be free." She was awarded the prize for her "tireless work promoting democratic rights" in the country.
