Supreme Court lifts restrictions on 'roving' ICE raids in Los Angeles

SUMMARY

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, overturned a federal judge’s order halting ICE raids in Los Angeles, allowing Trump’s deportation policy to target individuals based on speaking Spanish or gathering at day labor sites like Home Depot and car washes.

U.S. District Judge Frimpong, appointed by Biden, had ruled these “roving patrols” unconstitutional, citing reliance on race, accents, and low-wage jobs without probable cause.

Justice Kavanaugh supported brief detentions using “common sense” indicators like limited English proficiency or construction work.

Sotomayor, joined by Kagan and Jackson, dissented: “We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job.”

The Justice Department called Frimpong’s order a “straitjacket” on enforcement.

Stephen Miller confirmed a 3,000-daily arrest quota on Fox News, despite DOJ denials to the 9th Circuit.

Nearly half of Los Angeles’ population is Hispanic. Trump’s National Guard deployment to LA, opposed by Gov. Newsom, was ruled illegal but remains on appeal.
