Catholic University of America panel explores how Christians should think about AI

SUMMARY

At a Catholic University of America panel on September 23, hosted by the Institute for Human Ecology, experts discussed AI’s impact on human cognition and relationships. Panelists included Ross Douthat, Father Michael Baggot, Will Wilson, and Brian J.A. Boyd.

Will Wilson, CEO of Antithesis, an AI contractor for Palantir, suggested cognitive labor could soon become rare, stating, “It’s very possible that we’re entering a world where very soon any kind of cognitive labor, any kind of reason, any thought... It’ll be a thing that weirdos do.”

Father Michael Baggot, a bioethics professor, highlighted risks to human connection, noting AI-driven artificial intimacy could undermine deep interpersonal bonds essential for well-being. He contributes to Magisterium AI, a tool offering reliable Catholic answers without simulating human connection.

Brian J.A. Boyd, from Loyola University New Orleans, emphasized that over-reliance on AI risks weakening human relationships and spiritual practices, as constant screen interaction could disrupt faith-based connections.

Wilson rejected fears of widespread unemployment, arguing human desires will create new roles. However, he noted AI’s ability to mimic intelligence could reduce reliance on human reasoning, potentially reshaping societal engagement with thought and intellect.
