US expands 'military zones' along southwestern border

SUMMARY

The Pentagon is expanding military zones at the southwestern border to reportedly aid in reducing migrant crossings. Two new strips of land will be patrolled by U.S. soldiers—one in Arizona and another in southern Texas.

These areas will be designated as national defense zones. Migrants found there will be treated as trespassers and can be detained until Border Patrol arrives. This adds to existing military installations, increasing the military presence at the border.

Currently, nearly 9,000 troops are deployed, along with aerial reconnaissance and naval support, as part of the Trump administration's efforts to bolster border security. Armed forces from Fort Carson in Colorado comprise a significant part of the ground troops.
