Boeing grounds 777X test fleet after failure of key engine mounting structure

SUMMARY

Boeing has grounded its 777X test fleet due to a failure in a critical engine mounting structure. This issue was discovered during a routine inspection post-flight on one aircraft and found in two others. Boeing confirmed that, “During scheduled maintenance, we identified a component that did not perform as designed.” The problem arose after a test flight on August 16, leading to further inspections revealing cracks in the structure known as the "thrust link." This setback is frustrating for the 777X program, which had gained momentum since FAA testing began in July. Boeing plans to replace the faulty parts before resuming flight tests.
