Taiwan detects first cases of swine fever

SUMMARY

Taiwan has culled 195 pigs after its first detection of African swine fever. The agriculture ministry confirmed no other infections have been found on the island. This virus is fatal for pigs but does not affect humans.

The infected pigs were from a farm in Taichung, where a control zone has been established to prevent further spread. Transport and slaughter of pigs are banned for five days.

Taiwan's pork industry is worth about NT$70 billion (US$2.3 billion) annually. President Lai Ching-te urged vigilance and advised the public not to panic while reporting any unusual deaths among pigs.
