Japan proposes 'economic zone' linking Indian Ocean to Africa

SUMMARY

Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba proposed an economic zone linking the Indian Ocean to Africa to strengthen Japan's influence in the region. This move comes as U.S. presence in Africa diminishes while China's influence expands.

At the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, Ishiba stressed Japan's commitment to African growth and the African Continental Free Trade Area. He announced a $5.5 billion loan initiative to support sustainable development and plans to train 30,000 AI experts over three years. The summit includes leaders from about 50 African nations, focusing on economic collaboration and aid.
