Hundreds of earthquakes detected at Washington's Mt. Rainier

SUMMARY

A swarm of small earthquakes has been detected beneath Mt. Rainier in Washington State. The U.S. Geological Survey reported these quakes started early Tuesday and are occurring at a rate of several per minute. The largest quake recorded was magnitude 1.7, and none have been felt at the surface.

Geologists state this event is not a cause for concern, adding that the volcano shows no alarming activity. The alert level remains at Green/Normal. Similar quake swarms happen a couple of times a year, but this one is unusual due to the number of quakes. Mt. Rainier last erupted around 1,000 years ago.
