South Korea prosecutors indict impeached president Yoon for insurrection

SUMMARY

South Korean prosecutors have indicted impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol for insurrection, stemming from his brief imposition of martial law on December 3. Democratic Party spokesman Han Min-soo stated, “The prosecution has decided to indict Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing charges of being a ringleader of insurrection.” This charge carries no presidential immunity and can result in life imprisonment.

Yoon's defense argued he only intended martial law as a warning for breaking political deadlock. He was impeached by the opposition-led parliament and has been in custody since January 15, making history as the first sitting president to be arrested. The top court will ultimately decide on his impeachment and presidential powers within 180 days.
