Australia getting a public registry of child sex offenders

SUMMARY

Queensland will establish a public registry for child sex offenders, known as 'Daniel's Law', providing parents with the ability to access a searchable database of offenders' images and details. This legislation, named after Daniel Morcombe, aims to enhance child safety and empower parents to make informed decisions about unsupervised contacts. It will include data on offenders who fail to comply with reporting obligations.

Premier David Crisafulli emphasized the law's role in preventing child exploitation, stating, "Monsters cannot be allowed to lurk in the darkness." However, the proposal has faced criticism for potentially harming victims by exposing offender identities. Additional information regarding the registry is expected soon.
