Fertility rate in England falls to lowest level since records began in 1938

SUMMARY

The fertility rate in England and Wales has dropped to its lowest level since 1938, with an average total fertility rate of 1.44 children per woman in 2023.

This follows a consistent decline since 2010, with 591,072 live births recorded, the fewest since 1977. A rate of 2.1 is needed for natural population replacement. According to Greg Ceely of the ONS, the decline is most notable among women aged 20-29. Research indicates the UK's fertility rate is falling faster than any other G7 country, with a decrease of 18.8%.
