DR Congo and Rwanda sign peace deal after years of war

SUMMARY

Leaders from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda signed a peace deal in Washington, D.C., aiming to end years of conflict. The agreement, facilitated by the US and Qatar, follows escalated fighting involving M23 rebels that has resulted in significant casualties and displacement since January.

Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe stated, "We believe that a turning point has been reached with the Democratic Republic of the Congo."

The Congolese Foreign Minister emphasized the need for disengagement, justice, and returning displaced families. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it an "important moment after 30 years of war."

Analysts are hopeful but skeptical about immediate peace, considering the region's long history of violence.
