Meta to spend hundreds of billions to build AI data centres

SUMMARY

Meta plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars to build large AI data centers in the U.S., according to founder Mark Zuckerberg. The first center, Prometheus, will begin operations in 2026 and cover an area nearly the size of Manhattan. Another center, Hyperion, is projected to be operational by 2030.

Zuckerberg emphasized the push for "superintelligence" technology. Meta has made over $160 billion in revenue in 2024. He stated, "We're building multiple more titan clusters."

These AI centers will require significant resources, potentially consuming 1.7 trillion gallons of water globally by 2027. Meta shares rose 1% after the announcement.
