Billionaire Andrej Babis' party ANO wins Czech parliamentary election

Billionaire Andrej Babis has won the Czech parliamentary elections, with his populist ANO party receiving nearly 35% of the vote and securing 81 of 200 seats. Although he is expected to lead coalition talks, his party fell short of a majority.

Babis will engage with the anti-Green Deal Motorists for Themselves and the anti-immigrant Freedom and Direct Democracy party to forge a government.

While he shares common ground with the Motorists, relations with the SPD are uncertain. Babis has rejected calls for a referendum on EU or NATO membership and has adopted anti-Ukrainian rhetoric during the campaign. He may opt to govern with a minority cabinet supported by the two parties.
