Salt Typhoon hack

China hacked email systems of US congressional committee staff

SUMMARY

China has hacked the email systems of congressional staff on critical US committees, part of its broader cyber espionage campaign called Salt Typhoon. The attack impacted staffers from the House China, foreign affairs, intelligence, and armed services committees, with intrusions detected in December. It remains unclear whether lawmakers' emails were accessed.

Salt Typhoon, operated by China’s Ministry of State Security, has targeted US communication networks for years, enabling access to unencrypted communications.

Mark Warner, Senate intelligence committee member, expressed concern over the lack of attention to this threat. The Chinese embassy denied the allegations, calling them unfounded.
