UK ELECTIONS

16 and 17-year-olds will be able to vote in the next UK general election

SUMMARY

Sixteen and 17-year-olds will be allowed to vote in all UK elections, marking the first significant electoral reform since 1969. This change will enable around 9.5 million more voters to participate, as young people already vote in some elections in Wales and Scotland.

The government aims to "boost democratic engagement" and restore trust in democracy. Angela Rayner emphasized the importance of increased participation, stating, "We cannot take our democracy for granted."

Additionally, voter ID will include bank cards, and measures will be taken to limit foreign donations through "shell companies." New rules will impose stricter checks and penalties for political finance violations.
