Catholic bishops end refugee aid with US gov due to funding cuts

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is ending partnerships with the federal government to aid refugees and migrant children due to funding cuts from the Trump administration. Archbishop Timothy Broglio stated, “As a national effort, we simply cannot sustain the work on our own at current levels.” This decision will reduce services provided to those in need. The programs are set to close by the end of September. The bishops previously served over 930,000 refugees since 1980, relying partly on federal grants. Layoffs are occurring, with 93 staff already affected.
