Female Asian elephant calf born

SUMMARY

A female Asian elephant calf was born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute on February 2, 2026. Her mother, Nhi Linh, and father, Spike, welcomed this calf after nearly 25 years of no births at the zoo.

The birth creates an opportunity for the public to contribute to elephant care and conservation by voting to name the calf through donations.

"After waiting nearly 25 years for an Asian elephant calf, this birth fills us with profound joy," said Brandie Smith, the zoo's director.

The Elephant Community Center is temporarily closed to the public for this special event.
