Cuba sees island-wide blackout after power plant failure

SUMMARY

Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout on Friday after the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant failed, disconnecting the National Electrical System. In Havana, the absence of street lights created chaos as only a few generators were operational. The government had already advised power-saving measures, shutting schools and ordering essential workers to stay home.

Cuban officials attributed the crisis to aging infrastructure, U.S. sanctions, and recent hurricanes. Seven of eight thermoelectric plants are currently out of service, and many are lacking fuel. The Energy Minister warned of ongoing challenges. However, plans for solar energy installations aim to boost capacity in the coming years.
