Brussels slaps down Thierry Breton over 'harmful content' letter to Elon Musk

SUMMARY

Brussels has accused internal market commissioner Thierry Breton of "going rogue" for sending a letter to Elon Musk, warning of potential punishments if content on X risks EU citizens' safety. The European Commission stated that Breton did not have prior approval for the letter from its president, Ursula von der Leyen. Officials close to Breton claimed the letter was planned beforehand, coinciding with Musk's interview with Donald Trump.

Breton, responsible for enforcing the Digital Services Act, reminded Musk of his legal duties regarding harmful content. Musk responded to Breton with a humorous meme, while a Trump campaign spokesperson condemned the EU's interference in U.S. elections. An EU official noted that they await a formal response from Musk.
