Germany introduces new travel restrictions for men aged 17–45

SUMMARY

Germany will require men aged 17 to 45 to obtain permission before leaving the country for over three months, starting January 1, 2026. This applies to those going abroad for education, work, or travel. A Bundeswehr Career Center must issue this authorization, making it a permanent aspect of German law under the Military Service Modernization Act. Previously, permits were necessary only during heightened threats. Now, they will be mandatory during peacetime too.

This move aims to bolster military readiness, with plans to increase troop numbers to 270,000 by 2035. A spokesperson noted that the rule helps with "a reliable and credible accounting of those liable for military service."
